Epitaph

When revisiting my life's anatomy

In waking and more often,

beneath closed lids

Statues rise like charging knights

To whisper the significance of Kerri's bones

Never present but beneath the ground

Where my summer feet rushed and tip-toed

--Hello to you, a seasonal ghost.

With your eyelashes like yarn and tar-black palms

Where are you in the new world?

Did you hear my sunrise entreaty

Gather it up and stare at its fragments

How will you and I ever know each other

Stone-still moments knotted as they were,

In time

Given back by no one

Our whispers must travel through

Centuries, fissure

Left here they are known to none,

But God's eager hands

(A laugh, caught in the wind)

All that I know makes me so tired
